Career Planning

The Ratcliffe Hicks School of Agriculture (RHSA) offers technical and applied education in Ornamental Horticulture and Turfgrass Management, and Animal Science. Graduates receive an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree. The School was established at the University of Connecticut in 1941 through a bequest from Mr. Ratcliffe Hicks of Tolland, Connecticut. The School provides an opportunity for students with a variety of educational backgrounds and experiences to further their education with an applied focus. RHSA students include recent high school graduates as well as adults who are interested in continuing their education or a career change. Coursework offers a balance between technical and theoretical aspects of animal science, horticulture, and related disciplines.

RHSA graduates have the skills and knowledge to enter many challenging and exciting careers. They are highly qualified for competitive positions and often own businesses or manage production operations. Many RHSA graduates continue their education and pursue baccalaureate or higher degrees.

Academic Programs
Ornamental Horticulture and Turfgrass Management majors may concentrate in Ornamental Horticulture or Turfgrass Management. Graduates pursue a wide array of careers in floriculture, landscape and grounds maintenance, greenhouse and garden center operation, nursery production, park and land management, or arboretums and botanic gardens.

Animal Science majors focus on Equine Studies, or Dairy/Livestock Management. Graduates find positions in the horse industry, production enterprises, animal health, breeding and genetics, nutrition, meat science and food handling, or related service industries.

Program Requirements

Associate of Applied Science degree requirements are outlined on the RHSA Plan of Study. Ratcliffe Hicks classes are described in the Undergraduate Catalog. Small classes and approachable faculty create an excellent educational environment and a warm and friendly atmosphere. Independent study opportunities are available in all departments. Students help with faculty research, get involved with special projects, or conduct their own independent projects. RHSA students may also choose to arrange internships for academic credit, or register for courses that emphasize practical experience and work-related activities.

Career Planning
RHSA graduates obtain employment in various businesses or manage their own operations. The University's Department of Career Services offers many programs and resources to assist students in career planning. RHSA also posts and distributes information regarding employment opportunities. Alumni of the Ratcliffe Hicks School and the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources serve as a valuable network for current students and graduates.
